GTA 6 map: every region of Leonida and the real places behind them

A tour of GTA VI's six regions, from Vice City to Mount Kalaga, with the Florida locations fans and press think inspired each one.

GTA VI takes place across Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida. Rockstar has named six regions. Below is what each one is, and the real place it seems to be based on.

One caveat before we start: Rockstar hasn't said which real places inspired which region. The real-world matches below come from fans and journalists comparing trailers with the real Florida. Some are obvious; a couple are still argued over.

Vice City

What it is: Leonida's big city of beaches, nightlife, money and crime. The 26-minute gameplay video showed neighbourhoods including Ocean Beach and Bayside.

Real-world inspiration: Miami. Vice City has been Rockstar's Miami since 2002's GTA: Vice City, and the trailers are full of recognisable spots: an Art Deco beachfront strip, a busy cruise port and graffiti-covered arts districts. We dig into the matches in Real Miami vs Vice City.

Leonida Keys

What it is: A string of tropical islands joined by long bridges. Gorgeous water, sleepy towns and a long history of smuggling, which is where Jason has been working when the story starts.

Real-world inspiration: the Florida Keys. Long, low bridges in the trailers look a lot like the Seven Mile Bridge on the Overseas Highway, the road that hops island to island down to Key West.

Grassrivers

What it is: Wild mangrove wetlands full of alligators and other predators. Expect airboats and swampy hideouts.

Real-world inspiration: the Everglades. The name is a nod to the Everglades' nickname, the "River of Grass".

Port Gellhorn

What it is: Leonida's "forgotten coast": a run-down former holiday town of cheap motels, empty strip malls and people who've run out of options.

Real-world inspiration: disputed. Many people point to Florida's Gulf coast and Panhandle beach towns such as Panama City Beach. Others suggest different stretches of coast. Rockstar often blends several places into one.

Ambrosia

What it is: A farming and industrial area dominated by a huge sugar refinery, with a strong biker presence.

Real-world inspiration: Lake Okeechobee sugar country. Towns like Clewiston, which calls itself "America's Sweetest Town", are built around sugar production, which makes them the most popular guess.

Mount Kalaga National Park

What it is: Rugged wilderness on Leonida's northern border for hunting, fishing and off-roading.

Real-world inspiration: unclear. Florida is famously flat and has no mountains, so this is where Rockstar has taken the most creative licence. Fans have suggested everything from north Florida forests to canyons in neighbouring Georgia.

How big is the map?

Rockstar hasn't published an official size. You'll see figures online, often claiming roughly double GTA V. Those are fan estimates made by measuring trailer footage, so take them with a pinch of salt until people can explore the real thing.
