How to preload GTA 6: date, space needed and steps

GTA 6 preloading starts November 12 for digital pre-orders. Who can preload, how to get ready on PS5 and Xbox, and what Rockstar hasn't said yet.

Grand Theft Auto VI can be downloaded before launch. Digital pre-orders can preload from November 12, 2026, a week before the game comes out on November 19. Here's what Rockstar has said, how to get your console ready, and what's still unknown.

When does GTA 6 preloading start?

Rockstar's pre-order announcement says digital pre-orders can begin preloading on November 12, 2026, so you can play the moment the game unlocks. Some outlets say it opens at local midnight on that date. Rockstar's announcement gives only the date, so treat the exact start time as expected rather than confirmed.

Our release time page has a live countdown to preload and to launch, plus midnight launch times for every major time zone.

Who can preload?

  • Digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: yes, from November 12.
  • The boxed edition: it contains a download code, not a disc. Rockstar says the physical version goes on sale from November 12 so those buyers can preload too: redeem the code and download.
  • PC: there's no PC version announced, so there's nothing to preload.

If you haven't pre-ordered yet, anything bought before November 20, 2026 includes the Vintage Vice City Pack. Prices are $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. The full breakdown is in everything we know about GTA 6.

How much space do you need?

Rockstar hasn't published the download size. One outlet reported up to 200 GB, but that figure is unconfirmed. Big open-world games often run well past 100 GB, so clear space on your console's drive before November 12 rather than on the night. You'll want room for the game plus a launch update.

How to get ready on PS5 and Xbox

Menus change between system updates, so check Sony's and Microsoft's support pages for the exact steps on your console. The basics are the same everywhere:

  1. Buy the digital edition (or redeem the code from the boxed edition) on the account you play on.
  2. Free up storage well before November 12.
  3. Connect to the internet, with a wired connection if you can. A download this size takes hours on slower connections.
  4. Turn on automatic downloads and rest-mode downloading in your console settings so the game can finish while you're away.
  5. Check your library on November 12. Once preloading opens, the game should show as ready to download. Start it manually if it doesn't begin on its own.
  6. Stay signed in and online the night before launch so any small update downloads in time.

Can you play early if you preload?

No. Preloading only downloads the files ahead of time. The game stays locked until launch, and Rockstar hasn't announced the exact unlock time. Most console releases unlock at midnight local time, and our release time table shows when that lands in each region if that's the case.

What we don't know yet

  • The exact download size.
  • The exact time preloading opens in each region.
  • The exact launch-day unlock time.
  • Whether a day-one update will be needed after preloading. Rockstar hasn't said.

We update this page as soon as Rockstar confirms any of it. The full dated list of announcements is on our news timeline, and the launch email is the quickest way to hear when the community map opens.
